Biology & Physical Description

Reddish with shades of yellow and white; black marks behind eye, at base of pectoral fin, and black saddle areas in front of first dorsal fin, between dorsal fins, below soft dorsal fin, and in front of tail; deepness of color varies with light intensity, becoming lighter in bright light. A Pacific goatfish (Pseudupeneus multifasciatus) banded in light and dark red. The name Moano means pale red in Hawaiian. The English name for the fish is the Manybar Goatfish. Moano are able to change most of it's coloration at will and can flip from what you see here to dark red on command. Hawaiian folklore stated that Moano would become red from eating flowers from Ohia Lehua trees, which are a brilliant red. Eat Diurnal; crustaceans and small fish and live solitary or in small group lives.
