Location Habitat

Seatrout found inshore and nearshore in and around seagrass meadows, mangrove-fringed shorelines, deep holes and channels and above oyster bars. Free-line live shrimp or small pinfish or pigfish (grunts) near the bottom to entice trout out of grass-bed holes. Attaching a float will allow these baits to drift over the grass beds as you search for trout. Casting with soft-bodied jigs, top-water poppers and spoons can be effective. Trout are very delicate, so returning unwanted or illegal fish promptly to the water is necessary to maintain a healthy population. Spotted seatrout are a good eating fish. Inhabits river estuaries and shallow coastal marine waters over sand bottoms, often associated with seagrass beds. Also occurs in salt marshes and tidal pools of high salinity. Feeds mainly on crustaceans and fishes. An important food and sport fish throughout its range. Utilized fresh for steaming, broiling and baking

Biology & Physical Description

The seatrout has an elongate, somewhat compressed body with a slightly elevated back. The head is long with a pointed snout and large oblique mouth. The dorsal fin is continuous or slightly separate. The fins are scaleless with the exception of 1 - 10 rows of small scales at dorsal and anal fin bases. The lateral line extends onto the tail. This fish may be confused with others of its genus, especially the weakfish. However, the seatrout has a distinctive pattern of black spots scattered along the upper body and extending into the caudal and dorsal fins. The seatrout grows to a maximum length of 39 inches total length and a maximum weight of 17.5 pounds . Males reach sexual maturity at approximately 2 years of age - 7.9-9.4 inches standard length , while females mature at 3 years of age - 8.3-9.8 inches standard length. The expected life span of this species is 8-10 years.
